DoorDash has officially launched its own in-house drone delivery service, DoorDash Air, following approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The company has been granted a Part 135 air carrier certification, positioning it among a select group of operators like Wing and Amazon's Prime Air.

The DoorDash Air drones and supporting infrastructure were developed internally by the DoorDash Labs robotics and autonomy team. This move aims to expand drone delivery capabilities beyond current partner-assisted efforts.

DoorDash believes this will optimize deliveries, especially for mid-range orders (three to five miles) that often take longer. By handling these with drones, human drivers can focus on shorter, more profitable deliveries. The company plans to begin commercial deliveries with DoorDash Air this fall.
