GOG's New Owner Ditches Steam Fight

GOG has a new direction under Michał Kiciński, its co-founder who recently purchased the platform from CD Projekt Red. In a fresh interview, the new CEO outlined a strategy that deliberately sidesteps a direct sales war with Steam. Instead of chasing AAA volume, Kiciński wants to lean heavily into the platform's existing strengths: DRM-free gaming and the Game Preservation Program.

This move makes sense for the now-independent storefront. Trying to outbid Valve for major releases is a losing battle for a niche service. By focusing on modern classics and preserving older titles, GOG carves out a specific lane that respects its pro-consumer roots.

Kiciński noted that the buyout deal ensures CDPR titles will remain on the service for at least six years. This provides a stable revenue base while the team builds out a superior service for retro enthusiasts. It’s a smart pivot, acknowledging that GOG doesn't need to beat Steam to survive—it just needs to serve its dedicated community better than anyone else.
