Imec and Atlas Data Storage have announced a strategic partnership to accelerate synthetic DNA-based digital data storage technology. The collaboration combines Atlas' ASIC design expertise and scalable DNA synthesis technology with imec's advanced chip development, fabrication, and integration capabilities. Imec is also investing in Atlas as part of this deeper strategic relationship.

As AI-driven data creation accelerates, traditional magnetic storage faces limits in density, sustainability, and long-term reliability. DNA storage compresses vast datasets into tiny volumes while ensuring ultra-long durability with minimal energy and maintenance. One gram of DNA can potentially encode up to hundreds of petabytes of digital data, achieving dramatic footprint and energy improvements impossible with magnetic storage media.

The partnership has already yielded a custom nano-scale array of electrochemical cells monolithically manufactured on Atlas' control CMOS ASIC. This integrated chip orchestrates millions of individual synthesis sites, with imec's 300mm silicon platform key to reaching necessary throughput and scale. The collaboration demonstrates how convergence of life science and semiconductors can unlock radically new ways to store, sense, and process data.
