Ubuntu's next LTS, Ubuntu 26.10 Stonking Stingray, will debut a suite of AI tools in October 2026. Technical lead Jon Seager said Canonical will roll out both silent enhancements—like speech‑to‑text and OCR—and overt AI workflows, but only after internal testing proves they meet the project's transparency standards.

Developers are being nudged to experiment with AI, though no usage quotas are imposed. Seager emphasized a “go deep” mindset, letting teams pick varied models to discover what works. The company’s focus remains on open source models and offline inference, steering clear of proprietary weights that clash with Ubuntu's licensing ethos.

Implicit features will blend into existing services, while explicit additions introduce new, AI‑centric capabilities for power users. By limiting default reliance on cloud APIs, Canonical hopes to keep Ubuntu secure and adaptable for enterprises wary of external dependencies. The rollout signals a measured, community‑first approach to AI integration.
