Blizzard and Nexon Partner on StarCraft Shooter Revival

Blizzard's 2026 showcase hasn't delivered major surprises, but intense speculation surrounds the dormant StarCraft franchise. A South Korean report claims Blizzard and Nexon are co-operating on a shooter reimagining, with full-scale development already commenced. Nexon assigned the project to its internal Shooter Division, tapping noted modder Choi Jun-ho as team lead.

The real-time strategy series has been inactive since 2016's Nova Covert Ops DLC, and a 2017 remaster failed to satisfy fans. Blizzard's history with the IP outside RTS is troubled; the multi-platform StarCraft: Ghost was canceled in 2006. A separate shooter was reportedly in development at Blizzard HQ years ago, though its link to the Nexon project is unclear.

This partnership marks Blizzard's latest attempt to expand a classic IP beyond its origins under Microsoft ownership, despite recent internal upheavals. Nexon brings shooter experience from titles like Arc Raiders. Dubbed a potential "megaton project" by the original report, the collaboration aims to shake up the global gaming market if it avoids the pitfalls that doomed previous efforts.

Quick Fact: The final StarCraft II DLC arrived in late 2016.
