ASUS ROG Ally Gets Ryzen Z1 Extreme Update After 6-Month Gap

After a six-month drought, ASUS has released a new driver update for its ROG Ally handheld console, bringing the Ryzen Z1 Extreme SoC up to date. The update breaks a concerning pattern that began when Lenovo stopped providing updates and ASUS's own console had been running on six-month-old drivers from August 2025. This marks a significant shift from what appeared to be complete abandonment.

The situation had grown dire as AMD seemingly ended driver support for the Ryzen Z1 Extreme just two and a half years after launch. The irregular update cycle created uncertainty about whether OEMs or AMD were responsible for the delays. With the Z1 Extreme's configurable TDP ranging from 9 to 30 watts, each configuration requires testing and verification before official driver distribution, adding complexity to the update process.

While this update provides temporary relief for ROG Ally owners, the broader ecosystem remains complicated. Lenovo Korea has confirmed it has stopped its driver update plan for its products, leaving users to either switch platforms or rely on Linux-based operating systems with their own drivers. The future of support for these handheld devices remains uncertain despite this recent development.
