Apple Removes VK Apps, Russian Tech Calls for Android Switch

Apple recently pulled all VKontakte apps from the iOS App Store, sparking a backlash from VK Group. The company released a statement saying the removal happened without warning or explanation. VK Group accused Apple of acting unilaterally and threatened customers with lost access to a popular Russian social network.

VK Group noted that it has never been sanctioned and that international and U.S. counsel have issued opinions confirming the lack of restrictions. The company claims Apple holds those opinions but still removed the apps. It described the action as unjustified and unacceptable, citing the absence of any official notice.

The Kremlin responded via a Telegram channel quoting President Vladimir Peskov. He criticized Apple as an untrustworthy commercial provider and labeled its decisions as bizarre. Peskov urged Russian users to switch to Android or other domestic services, framing the removal as part of a broader pattern of Western‑tech interference.

VK’s Android apps remain fully functional, receiving updates and notifications through platforms like Ru Store, Google Play, Huawei App Gallery, Samsung Store, Xiaomi Store, and official sites. Users who keep iOS devices face a sudden loss of access to a key communication tool, while the Kremlin’s push for Android highlights a growing divide between Russian consumers and Western app ecosystems.
