Apple faces Kremlin backlash over VK app removals

Apple removed several VK‑related applications from the Russian App Store without warning, prompting a formal complaint from Moscow. The deleted software includes popular social networks, video services and messaging tools that millions of Russian users rely on daily. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned Apple that officials will seek clarification and may reassess cooperation if answers are not provided, and potential legal ramifications for both parties.

VK accused Apple of unjustified interference, arguing the removals block access to services used by tens of millions and undermine the state‑backed MAX platform that the government promotes as a domestic alternative. MAX, developed by VK, comes preinstalled on all Android devices sold in Russia, but iPhones have not been officially available since Apple halted sales in March 2022, and limits access for enterprises.

The dispute highlights the growing friction between Western tech firms and Russia’s effort to control digital infrastructure. With Apple’s iPhone market share in the country already negligible—estimated at under 1.5 % of global revenue—the Kremlin’s threat to end cooperation carries limited economic weight but signals a willingness to push users toward Android alternatives, in the near term as well.
