Valve's Steam Deck ratings miss Steam Machine games

Valve's new Steam verification system, designed to inform players about game compatibility on the Steam Deck, is leaving Steam Machine owners in the dark for a significant number of titles. Many graphically demanding games that struggle on the handheld are listed with an "Unknown" Steam Machine compatibility status, despite likely running well on the more powerful PC hardware. Valve's current explanation is that it is "still learning about" these games, offering no concrete compatibility information.

This lack of clarity is problematic for new Steam Machine buyers who want to know if their living room consoles can handle popular titles, some of which have hit Steam's Top Sellers lists. While the verification system does correctly identify games with text scaling issues on the Deck as "Verified" for Steam Machines (like 007: First Light and Lies of P), it offers no such guidance for games requiring an on-screen keyboard. Valve has yet to assign a Steam Machine rating for nearly two dozen demanding titles, including Starfield, Elden Ring, and Dragon's Dogma 2.

The absence of this information directly impacts consumer purchasing decisions and potentially the perceived value of the Steam Machine platform. It creates an uneven playing field where Steam Deck compatibility is clearly defined, but Steam Machine performance remains a mystery for many games.
