UK Fines Reddit $19.6M for Failing to Verify User Ages

The UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has fined Reddit £14.5 million ($19.6 million) for failing to implement robust age verification measures. The regulator found that Reddit processed children's personal data without a lawful basis, potentially exposing them to inappropriate content. This penalty follows an investigation into Reddit's practices prior to its July 2025 rollout of age verification for UK users.

Reddit's reliance on self-declaration for age verification remains under scrutiny, as the ICO considers this method insufficient for protecting children online. The company has announced plans to appeal the fine, arguing that collecting more private information contradicts its commitment to user privacy. Reddit maintains that it collects minimal identifying information by default and allows users to browse anonymously without an account.

The fine also addresses Reddit's alleged failure to conduct a data protection impact assessment before January 2025. This case follows similar actions against other platforms, including a £247,590 fine issued to Imgur owner MediaLab for comparable violations. The ICO continues to prioritize high-risk services that rely on self-declaration for age verification, indicating that further regulatory scrutiny of online platforms is likely.
