A multidisciplinary team has used proteomics to analyze trace proteins from Renaissance medical manuals, revealing how 16th-century people experimented with home remedies. The researchers examined two 1531 German medical manuals by physician Bartholomäus Vogtherr, finding evidence of ingredients like watercress, rosemary, and even human feces in treatments for hair loss and other ailments.

This marks the first time proteomics has been applied to Renaissance recipes, enhanced by multispectral imaging and archival research. The team discovered handwritten notes and protein traces showing how "reader-practitioners" actively tinkered with recipes, adding personal observations about treatments for urinary stones and skin conditions. The analysis revealed traces of plants with yellow flowers alongside hair dye recipes, reflecting the era's belief in visual resemblances between remedies and desired outcomes.

The study demonstrates how Renaissance people approached medicine as hands-on experimentation rather than purely book-learned knowledge. By combining scientific analysis with historical context, researchers gained unprecedented insight into how ordinary people adapted medical knowledge to their needs.
