Nintendo Switch Gets $20 Pokémon Red/Green GBA Remakes

Nintendo announced it will re-release Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen on the original Switch for $20 each. These 2004 Game Boy Advance remakes of the original Pokémon games are widely considered the best versions, fixing bugs and balance issues while maintaining faithful gameplay mechanics. The ports will be available following a Pokémon Presents stream on February 27 at 9 am Eastern.

Unlike the 2018 Let's Go adaptations, FireRed and LeafGreen preserve the original battling, catching mechanics, and graphics. The games will support local wireless multiplayer but not online play, though Nintendo initially mentioned but later removed references to Pokémon Home integration. This multiplayer support is particularly significant as these were the first Pokémon titles to enable wireless play before the Nintendo DS made Wi-Fi standard.

Originally released as pack-in games with the bulky Game Boy Advance Wireless Adapter, FireRed and LeafGreen allowed up to 30 players to gather in a "Union Room" for battles and trades. The upcoming Switch ports adapt the original 1996 Pokémon Red and Green games, which were later localized as Pokémon Red and Blue in the US. These remakes remain the definitive way to experience the classic Pokémon formula on modern hardware.
