Pokémon celebrates its 30th anniversary today with a wave of nostalgic releases from Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. In addition to re-releasing the Game Boy Advance remakes of Pokémon Red and Blue on Nintendo Switch Online, they're also launching a unique Game Boy-shaped portable music player called the Pokémon Game Music Collection.

This palm-sized device, announced by longtime series composer Junichi Masuda during today's anniversary Pokémon Presents livestream, features 45 different cartridges, each containing a different melody or sound effect from the original games' soundtrack. Masuda emphasized that special care has gone into making the audio sound authentic to the original Game Boy hardware. Each cartridge also displays a screenshot from the games, creating the illusion of gameplay when inserted into the device's display slot.

The Pokémon Game Music Collection is available to purchase from Pokémon Center starting today, though US pricing has not yet been confirmed. This quirky device joins last year's equally charming Lego Game Boy set as another non-playable replica of the iconic handheld, creating a shelf display that's sure to confuse guests expecting actual gaming functionality. The release highlights how Nintendo continues to leverage Pokémon's rich history and nostalgia to create unique collector's items that appeal to longtime fans.
