NIH Director's 'Scientific Freedom' Lectures Spark Controversy

The National Institutes of Health has launched a new 'Scientific Freedom Lectures' series, with the first talk scheduled for March 20. In a surprising choice, NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya selected Matthew Ridley, a British science journalist known for fringe views on COVID-19 and climate change, as the inaugural speaker. The lecture will focus on the lab leak theory of SARS-CoV-2's origin.

The theme of 'scientific freedom' reflects Bhattacharya's personal crusade against what he perceives as censorship of his pandemic-era views. As a co-author of the Great Barrington Declaration, he advocated for letting COVID-19 spread through healthy populations while protecting vulnerable groups. Public health officials widely criticized this approach, warning it would overwhelm hospitals and increase mortality.

Rather than inviting a scientist whose work was genuinely suppressed, Bhattacharya chose Ridley, who has promoted controversial positions on climate science. While accepting basic climate science, Ridley argues warming will be minimal and beneficial to humanity. This selection suggests the lectures may prioritize ideological alignment over scientific credibility.
