Moderna Funds Ebola Vaccine Development

Moderna secured $50 million from CEPI to develop an mRNA vaccine targeting the Ebola Bundibugyo strain. This funding addresses a critical gap as no licensed vaccines currently exist for this specific strain. Moderna's approach builds on its mRNA technology platform, which proved successful during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The current Ebola outbreak marks only the third driven by the Bundibugyo strain, with detection delayed and the virus spreading out of control. Health officials face challenges including armed conflict in the affected DRC region and high population mobility. The lack of medical interventions specifically for this strain complicates response efforts.

CEPI also provided $3.2 million to IAVI and $8.6 million to Oxford and Serum Institute of India for alternative vaccine approaches. As of Friday, the WHO reports 1,041 cases and 241 deaths in the outbreak. Existing vaccines only target the Zaire strain, which has caused most large Ebola outbreaks historically.
