ChatGPT in Salmonella Investigation: AI's Role in Beer Cooler Outbreak

When a Salmonella outbreak at a county fair baffled health officials, they turned to an unusual source for help: ChatGPT. The outbreak, which sickened fairgoers who drank beer from a makeshift cooler, left investigators with more questions than answers. County health official Katherine Houser noted that workers were reluctant to provide details, fearing repercussions.

Health investigators suspected contaminated ice or cooler surfaces as the source, but without the cooler for testing, they needed confirmation. They fed outbreak details to ChatGPT, asking if Salmonella Agbeni could grow in improperly drained coolers and what similar outbreaks had been documented. While PubMed searches could have provided similar information, the chatbot's assurances that the cooler was a "credible and likely" source gave investigators confidence in their hypothesis.

The case report concludes with murky findings about ChatGPT's actual utility. Critically reviewing AI-generated answers may take as much time as traditional research, and the true source of contamination may never be known. However, the investigation did result in new cooler sanitation protocols, suggesting that whether AI was truly helpful or not, the outcome improved food safety practices.
