Wimbledon prize‑money protest sparks club backlash

Wimbledon organisers expressed surprise and disappointment after leading ATP and WTA players announced they will maintain their prize‑money protest during the 2026 Championships. Players praised the £64.2m prize pool – a 20 % rise and the tournament’s highest ever – but said the share of revenue remains inadequate and threaten to limit participation in future.

The players’ representatives argued the current allocation represents only 14.4 % of projected Wimbledon revenues, down from 14.9 % in 2015. They propose raising the cut to 16 per cent (£71.2m) as an interim step, eventually targeting 22 % by 2030 to match other tour events. Wimbledon officials counter that heavy investment in facilities makes such a jump unrealistic.

All England Club chair Debbie Jevans reiterated the tournament’s non‑profit status and its commitment to reinvest earnings into the sport, arguing revenue‑based formulas ignore those expenditures. She lamented that the message has not resonated with players, even as stars like Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner use media time to spotlight lower‑ranked peers. Wimbledon will meet the representatives after the event to discuss the dispute.
