Will Greenwood Backs Steve Borthwick to Lead England to 2027 World Cup

Former World Cup winner Will Greenwood expects England to retain head coach Steve Borthwick despite a disastrous Six Nations campaign. After a record-breaking 12-match winning streak, including an emphatic opening victory over Wales, Borthwick's team collapsed to four consecutive defeats. The team's discipline was particularly concerning, conceding 55 penalties, nine yellow cards and a red card across the tournament.

England's only bright spot came in their final match against France in Paris, where they outscored the eventual champions on tries 7-6 despite a last-gasp defeat. Greenwood believes the RFU will give Borthwick another chance to lead England into the 2027 World Cup in Australia. "I would be reasonably confident that the RFU will make a decision that they see enough that he will lead England to the World Cup in 2027," Greenwood told Sky Sports.

The RFU will conduct a post-tournament review to examine how England went from winning 12 straight games to losing four. The review will question whether players still support Borthwick's philosophy and examine coaching balance, team culture and training approaches. Despite the collapse, Borthwick retains credit for evolving the team and securing victories over Australia, New Zealand and France during the winning streak.
