Vasseur Defends Ferrari Strategy After Australian GP Result

Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur said he has no regrets over the team's strategy choices after Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton finished behind Mercedes drivers in the Australian Grand Prix. The Ferrari drivers initially fought for the lead after Leclerc's superb start from fourth position, but the race turned when Mercedes pitted both drivers onto hard tyres under a Virtual Safety Car on Lap 13.

Vasseur explained that Mercedes showed superior pace throughout the race, being three to four tenths faster than Ferrari once they switched to hard tyres. The Mercedes drivers maintained this advantage for the entire stint, allowing George Russell to win and Kimi Antonelli to finish second. Leclerc took third while Hamilton finished fourth, just six tenths of a second behind his teammate at the chequered flag.

Vasseur defended the strategy, saying Ferrari was not comfortable that a one-stop strategy was possible when Mercedes pitted. He revealed the team had targeted extending their stint and hoped for another Virtual Safety Car to make a cheaper pit stop. Leclerc confirmed this approach, saying Ferrari expected a more attritional race with multiple safety car periods. Hamilton showed strong pace at the end, believing he was just two laps from overtaking Leclerc for a podium finish in his first race with Ferrari.
