South Africa salvaged a point in Group A after Teboho Mokoena converted a late penalty to level the match against the Czech Republic in Atlanta. The Czechs had taken the lead in the sixth minute through Michal Sadilek’s strike, while Patrik Schick missed a header inside the first minute. The draw leaves both sides on one point.

Both teams created few clear chances after the opening goal. Czech forward Vladimir Darida found space inside the box but mistimed his finish, and South Africa’s Thapelo Maseko saw his effort blocked after Matej Kovar spilled a cross. Hugo Broos’ side struggled to test goalkeeper Ronwen Williams until the penalty incident.

The penalty resulted from Pavel Sulc’s inadvertent handball nine minutes from time, giving Mokoena the chance to restore parity. South Africa pressed forward in the final minutes, with Kamogelo Sebelebele firing towards goal, but the Czech defense held. The point keeps the group wide open, with each side still able to reach four points and secure at least third place.

Coach Hugo Broos praised his squad’s reaction after the earlier 3-0 loss to Mexico, noting the aggression and chance creation despite the luck factor. He acknowledged the Czech Republic’s physical presence but highlighted South Africa’s improvement in second‑ball contests. The draw restores confidence ahead of the decisive Group A clash with South Korea.
