McLaren protests Monaco result after Gasly's podium reinstated

McLaren and Red Bull have lodged appeals with the FIA International Court of Appeal over the Monaco Grand Prix classification after Alpine successfully overturned Pierre Gasly's pit‑lane speeding penalties. The appeal seeks to restore the original order that saw Gasly dropped from third to seventh, promoting Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar to fourth and moving Oscar Piastri into fifth.

Piastri argued the case sets a “tricky precedent”, fearing teams might avoid serving penalties during safety‑car periods and later contest results. He noted that he, George Russell, Lewis Hamilton and Franco Colapinto all served penalties under the safety car, leaving them unable to challenge the decision as Alpine did. The FIA has yet to schedule a hearing in Paris, but weeks are expected.

Alpine’s success restored Gasly to third, handing him a podium trophy and prompting him to call for rule clarity to avoid repeat disputes. McLaren’s appeal, while not targeting Gasly personally, reflects concerns that post‑race reversals could destabilise final official results and affect championship points. The outcome will determine whether teams can rely on on‑track penalties or pursue lengthy legal routes.
