Max Verstappen admits victory at the Spanish Grand Prix will be "tough" due to a lack of overtaking opportunities at Madrid's new street circuit. Qualifying third, just over a tenth behind polesitter Lando Norris and Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, the Red Bull driver expressed skepticism about challenging the McLaren for the win. "There are no corners where you can pass," Verstappen said, noting he must rely on rivals suffering aggressive tyre degradation. He acknowledged long runs showed high degradation for everyone, which could be the key factor on race day.

Verstappen was satisfied with his qualifying performance, marking his closest gap to pole since Monaco. He felt the car had made "nice improvements" and was in a "decent window" immediately, though he highlighted a persistent struggle in the final sector with energy deployment compared to competitors. Despite the limitations, he was happy with the progression through Q1, Q2, and Q3.

When asked if he could have hoped for better after topping Q2 by 0.160s, Verstappen noted he was one of the few drivers to use two tyre sets, making the comparison unfair. Strategy will be heavily influenced by Madrid's notably long pitlane.
