Former jockey Levi Williams, 27, received a three‑year sentence after a March 8 brawl outside the Waggon and Horses in Newmarket turned fatal. Williams punched 71‑year‑old Richard Wingrove, who fell and struck his head on pavement, later dying from a skull fracture. CCTV captured the exchange, showing the jockeys blocking the pub entrance before the fatal blow in the scene that that.

Prosecutor Jane Oldfield testified that both Wingrove men were ejected after disorderly conduct, and that Williams and friend Matthew Wilson were present during the altercation. Oldfield described the defendant as drunk, shaken and cocaine‑positive when arrested. Williams claimed he had only a few pints and felt threatened, but the court rejected self‑defence for the final punch in the case today.

Judge Sean Enright ruled Williams was not the initial aggressor and that the first blows could be seen as self‑defence, yet the last punch was unjustifiable. He added, “You could have just trotted away.” The sentencing underscores the court’s stance that intoxication and violence against a vulnerable victim warrant custodial punishment, ending the case with a clear custodial outcome today.
