Itauma Ready for World Title Push After Devastating KO Wins

Moses Itauma's rapid rise has convinced his team he's ready for world title contention. The 21-year-old heavyweight prospect has destroyed former world title challenger Dillian Whyte in one round and most recently dispatched Jermaine Franklin inside five rounds. Trainer Ben Davison believes it's time to aim for the top.

"I think the goal now is to get him a world champion as soon as possible," Davison told Sky Sports. Itauma wants to claim silverware before turning 22. With only 14 professional fights and 12 knockout wins, Davison feels he's seen enough in the gym and in fights to justify this leap. "We've tried with opponents to get rounds and I think we're at the point now where we've seen enough."

Davison wouldn't hesitate to put Itauma in with Agit Kabayel for a WBC title. "He's at that level now where it's risk versus reward, so if there's a world title on the line I think we're all in," the trainer said. The path could be complicated by the WBO situation—his gymmate Fabio Wardley holds that belt and faces Daniel Dubois on May 9. If Wardley wins, Davison expects him to vacate for a potential Oleksandr Usyk unification rather than face Itauma.
