Keely Hodgkinson secured a silver medal at the European Athletics Championships in the women's 800m, narrowly missing out on a third consecutive title. The British Olympic champion was edged out by Swiss favourite Audrey Werro, who set a new championship record with a time of 1:54.81. Hodgkinson finished with a silver in 1:55.01, while Femke-Broeders Bol of the Netherlands took bronze in a national record 1:55.54.

Despite the defeat, Hodgkinson expressed mixed emotions, acknowledging that any medal in such a competitive field is an achievement. She stated, "I didn't do anything wrong, just one of those things." She also expressed her anticipation for future matchups with Werro, noting, "I'm looking forward to the next match-up."

Werro's performance shattered the championship record previously held by Olga Mineyeva since 1982. While the world record of 1:53.28 set by Jarmila Kratochvilova in 1983 remained untouched, the race delivered a thrilling spectacle. This silver medal marks Britain's 10th medal of the championships.
