England Test coach search: Langer backed by Lehmann

Darren Lehmann says he hasn’t been contacted for England’s Test head coach role, but backs fellow Australian Justin Langer as the frontrunner after Brendon McCullum’s sacking. Andy Flower ruled out a return due to franchise duties with Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL and London Spirit in The Hundred.

Lehmann coached Australia’s 5‑0 Ashes win in 2013‑14 and left after the 2018 ball‑tampering scandal. Langer succeeded him, guiding Australia to a 4‑0 Ashes win in 2021‑22 before resigning in February 2022 amid player disputes. Both are tied to IPL and The Hundred, so if approached 55‑year‑old Langer would need to choose between England, franchises or combine roles.

Lehmann praised Langer during Northamptonshire’s Vitality Blast semi‑final, saying he would be a "really good coach" and that England has talented county players. Harry Brook wants a decision before the three‑match Test series with Pakistan starts on 19 Aug, but the choice lies with the hierarchy.

The article notes current ODI captain Brook’s support for whoever is chosen and the importance of a coach for the upcoming Pakistan series.
