Chris Billam-Smith and Cheavon Clarke renew their amateur rivalry on Saturday at the Copper Box Arena in London. Ten years ago, Clarke defeated Billam-Smith in the national championships final, a loss that steered Clarke toward the GB squad and an Olympic career, while Billam-Smith struggled to break through as an amateur. The defeat fueled Billam-Smith's professional trajectory, where he eventually claimed world titles.
However, the emotional wound persists, driving his desire for revenge. Billam-Smith recently defeated Richard Riakporhe and is determined to settle the score with Clarke. Clarke, meanwhile, enters the bout having stopped Jack Massey in his last fight, showcasing his durability.
Billam-Smith acknowledges Clarke's dangerous resilience, noting he keeps his speed even when hurt. The former champion views this fight not just as a technical challenge, but as a chance to avenge a defeat that shaped his life for years. "I've always had this inner competitive spirit where I want to win," Billam-Smith said. "To then lose and then avenge it, that's a great feeling."".
