Brendon McCullum will leave his role as England Test head coach after a tenure that began in spring 2022 and produced 11 wins from his first 13 matches. A 4-1 Ashes loss in Australia and eight defeats in the last 12 Tests have ended the 'Bazball' era, leaving the ECB to find a successor before the home Ashes series next summer.

Potential replacements include former Australia coach Justin Langer, who guided the Baggy Greens to 15 wins and retained the Ashes in 2019, and former England coach Andy Flower, who took England to world No 1 and an away Ashes win in 2011. Flower’s recent work with the England Lions and T20 franchises has earned praise from ex‑captain Nasser Hussain. Former England captain Andrew Flintoff, now England Lions coach and appointed Sydney Thunder head coach, is also in contention, offering continuity and a known relationship with managing director Rob Key.

Other names mentioned are Surrey coach Gareth Batty, former Afghanistan boss Jonathan Trott, Derbyshire’s Mickey Arthur, and ex‑Australia coach Darren Lehmann, though Lehmann’s controversial past makes his candidacy unlikely. The choice will shape England’s preparation for the upcoming Ashes and influence the direction of the Test side after a period of mixed results.
