Chelsea have sealed a £47.5m deal to sell left‑back Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid, with add‑ons that could push the total to £51.8m. The 27‑year‑old, currently with Spain in the United States, will complete the move after the World Cup. Interest came from Barcelona, Atletico and Manchester City, but Cucurella chose the Spanish giants.

Real Madrid’s summer agenda accelerates under incoming manager Jose Mourinho, who arrives next month after securing Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries and Bernardo Silva. Cucurella’s exit follows public criticism of Chelsea’s transfer policy and the club’s decision to let Enzo Maresca depart. Chelsea consider Jorrel Hato as a potential first‑choice left‑back for next season.

Chelsea bought Cucurella from Brighton for £63m four years ago, meaning the current fee represents a modest loss but frees up budget for a replacement. The deal is unrelated to midfielder Enzo Fernandez, whom Chelsea value at over £120m. Cucurella’s switch gives Madrid depth on the flank as the new campaign looms.

With Hato competing for the role, Chelsea may still pursue a seasoned left‑back in the January window. Retaining Reece James and Cole Palmer as untouchable backs preserves defensive stability, but the squad will feel the loss of Cucurella’s versatility across both flanks. The club now faces a clear recruitment challenge.
