Just two weeks into the NBA season, storylines have shifted dramatically due to injuries and surprise performances. The Philadelphia 76ers have dominated early, while the New York Knicks, the reigning champions, struggle at 0-3. In the West, the Oklahoma City Thunder and Minnesota Timberwolves deal with star injuries, opening opportunities for other teams. The Los Angeles Lakers' Luka Doncic makes a strong early MVP case, and the Portland Trail Blazers show depth without Ja Morant.
In the second iteration of Power Rankings, ESPN insiders assigned four-word descriptions for each team's start. The Houston Rockets climb to No. 2 after Fred Van Vleet's return stabilizes the offense, boasting the league's best rating at 121.2. The Detroit Pistons rise to No. 3 thanks to improved 3-point shooting, with Cade Cunningham at a career-high 37%. The Philadelphia 76ers sit at No. 4, led by Tyrese Maxey's explosive fourth-quarter scoring. The Boston Celtics hold the top spot at No. 1.
Team rankings reflect the panel's view, including Jamal Collier, Michael C. Wright, Tim Mac Mahon, Dave Mc Menamin, Vincent Goodwill, Zach Kram, Ben Golliver, Kris Rhim, and Anthony Slater. Previous rankings include preseason and Oct. 28 iterations.
