US Soccer Sporting Director Matt Crocker Jumps to Saudi Arabia Role

Matt Crocker has abruptly resigned as Sporting Director for the U.S. Soccer Federation, sources confirmed to ESPN, departing only two months before the USA co-hosts the World Cup. Crocker is reportedly heading to a similar post with the Saudi Arabia soccer federation, a move described by one source as an opportunity he "can't pass up."

His timing is certainly unusual, given the proximity of the 2026 tournament and the pending conclusion of men's coach Mauricio Pochettino's contract post-event. Crocker, hired in April 2023, oversaw several major coaching decisions, including the rehire of Gregg Berhalter and the subsequent hiring of Emma Hayes for the USWNT.

While Crocker developed the long-term "U.S. Way" strategy intended to unify the sport's levels, federation sources insist those plans are finalized and ready for execution. Dan Helfrich, COO since November, will now provide executive oversight across sporting operations, working alongside assistant director Oguchi Onyewu.

Crocker’s departure leaves a void just as the USSF prepares to open its massive 200-acre training center next month in Fayetteville, Georgia. The federation must now swiftly address leadership continuity.
