Sabrina Wittmann, 34, made history as Germany's first woman to coach a men's professional soccer team when she took charge of FC Ingolstadt in May 2024. The Ingolstadt native, who grew up playing soccer and later coached the club's youth teams, stepped in as interim manager for the final four matches of the 2023-24 season, winning the Bayerischer Toto-Pokal regional cup along the way.

Initially overwhelmed by the global media attention on her groundbreaking role, Wittmann found relief when questions about being a female coach in a male-dominated sport gave way to scrutiny of her team's performances. Her authentic leadership style and deep connection with players—having coached many from U9 through senior level—earned her the full-time position. Ingolstadt CEO Dietmar Beiersdorfer praised her "clear football philosophy" and years of experience with the club.

Wittmann's journey included completing her UEFA Pro Licence in January 2025 while managing a team in transition that lost 19 players in summer 2025. Despite early-season struggles that left Ingolstadt near the relegation zone, improved February results led to a contract extension signed March 6, 2026. Her story represents not just a milestone for gender equality in German soccer, but a testament to authentic leadership and perseverance in pursuing professional dreams.
