President Florentino Pérez doubted Rodri's fitness after his September 2024 ACL tear, and new coach José Mourinho preferred alternatives like Mateus Fernandes and Enzo Fernández. Madrid instead renewed Aurélien Tchouaméni's contract.

However, Rodri's tournament-best performance — including wins over France and Argentina — shifted opinions.
