Rodri delays contract talks until after World Cup amid Real Madrid interest

Spain's World Cup preparations face distraction from transfer rumors involving their captain Rodri. The Manchester City midfielder confirmed he'll wait until after the tournament before discussing his future, despite Real Madrid expressing interest in the Ballon d'Or winner. His contract expires in 2027.

Madrid presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme named Rodri as a priority target ahead of this weekend's election against Florentino Pérez. Riquelme believes the former Villarreal and Atlético Madrid player "has to play for Real Madrid" as the club rebuilds after two seasons without major silverware.

Rodri joined Spain's training camp in Las Rozas and emphasized his sole focus remains international duty. "We're here to talk about the World Cup," he told reporters. "I'm focused, I'm captain of the national team. My responsibility is to accept it. I won't waste time on all that."

The midfielder overcame a serious cruciate ligament tear in September 2024 to feature 21 times for Manchester City during the 2025-26 Premier League campaign. His delayed decision keeps both clubs in limbo while Spain's World Cup campaign takes precedence over contract negotiations.
