Nigeria sacks coach Madugu after WAFCON flop

The Nigeria Football Federation dismissed coach Justine Madugu and his technical crew immediately after the Super Falcons missed the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time, failing to qualify at WAFCON and losing a playoff to South Africa. Madugu, who guided Nigeria to a record 10th Women’s Africa Cup title and earned CAF Coach of the Tournament honors, had taken over in September 2024 after Randy Waldrum’s resignation. His tenure ended abruptly despite the earlier success.

NFF president Ibrahim Gusau appointed a fact‑finding committee chaired by former general secretary Fanny Amun, including ex‑players Desire Oparanozie, Mutiu Adepoju, Ladan Bosso and referee Alex Mana, to investigate the poor performances and the unexpected World Cup omission. The panel has two weeks to report.

Meanwhile, the National Sports Commission is considering a plan to halt the scheduled Sept. 27 NFF elections and install a FIFA‑approved normalisation committee, citing recent qualification failures. Any such move would require FIFA and CAF approval under Article 8.2 of the FIFA Statutes.
