New Bills turf holds up in opener

During the Bills' preseason opener, the brand‑new grass at Highmark Stadium showed some wear as Buffalo defeated Carolina 29‑14. Pete Guelli said the turf is still in its first year and will improve as roots grow, so early blemishes are expected.

After a tour with general manager Brandon Beane and trainers, Guelli explained that clumps and a divot were quickly repaired, allowing play to continue. He noted that a mature field will provide better playability and safety, and the crew is monitoring progress closely.

The field uses Kentucky bluegrass from Tuckahoe Turf Farms, a supplier with NFL and MLB clients. Senior VP of venue operations Andy Major highlighted the importance of organic matter under the roots, which stabilizes the surface over time compared to a virgin field.

The Bills have postponed concerts and high‑school championships this season to protect the grass. The next real test will come with winter weather, and the team plans to adjust as conditions evolve.
