Cameroon Wins Wafcon 2026, Nigeria Misses World Cup

Cameroon won the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) in Morocco, demolishing Malawi 3-0 in the final to become only the fourth nation to lift the trophy. The expansion to 16 teams was justified as the Indomitable Lionesses, eliminated in qualifying, entered via world ranking and claimed the title. All four semi-finalists booked places at the 2027 Women's World Cup, with Malawi and Algeria making their debuts.

The tournament delivered greater competitiveness: Tanzania upset South Africa, and debutants Malawi stunned 10-time champions Nigeria 3-2 en route to the final. Temwa Chawinga won the golden boot with five goals. A total of 90 goals were scored in 32 games (2.81 per match), up from 2024. Female coach Valentine Nguele became the fifth woman to win Wafcon, taking charge just two months prior.

Nigeria's dominance ended with a quarter-final exit to Cameroon and a 2-1 World Cup play-off loss to South Africa, meaning the Super Falcons will miss the global tournament for the first time. Morocco's penalty woes (nine of 13 missed) and low attendances outside host matches remained concerns, while VAR checks caused lengthy delays.

Morocco has hosted the last three editions but 2028 hosting plans are uncertain due to a clash with the Los Angeles Olympics. South Africa and Ghana face inter-confederation qualifiers for the World Cup, while Olympic qualifiers for LA 2028 resume in October.
