Spain left-back Alejandro 'Álex' Grimaldo has completed his return to La Liga, joining Atlético Madrid from Bayer Leverkusen on a contract through 2030. The 30-year-old, born in Valencia, never played for a top-flight Spanish team despite his dream of returning home. He told the club he spoke with manager Diego Simeone ahead of the World Cup.

Grimaldo's journey took him from Atlético Vallbonense and Valencia youth academies to Benfica, where he emerged as a standout performer before his 2023 move to Leverkusen. His impact was immediate and spectacular, helping the Bundesliga and German Cup double in 2024. Over 145 appearances, he scored 30 goals and provided 45 assists, becoming a cornerstone of Bayer Leverkusen's historic success.

The transfer fee was set at €22 million, potentially rising to €25 million, as Grimaldo enters a new challenge in Spain. Having already represented Spain 14 times, he's currently part of the World Cup squad, though Marc Cucurella remains the preferred left-back under Luis de la Fuente. Atletico secured a versatile player who can operate across the backline or in midfield.

Grimaldo's move addresses Atletico's need for defensive depth while adding attacking flair from the back. His experience in Europe's top leagues and proven track record in high-pressure situations makes him a valuable addition to Diego Simeone's squad as they compete on multiple fronts.
