Atlético Madrid have reached an agreement to sign defender Cuti Romero from Tottenham for a potential €40 million. The deal includes a €35 million fixed fee plus a €5 million variable bonus. Romero, 28, has been a long-term target for Atletico under coach Diego Simeone and was widely expected to leave Spurs this summer.

He spent five seasons at Tottenham, first on loan, and became club captain in 2025. Romero made seven appearances at the 2026 World Cup and was part of Argentina's 2022 World Cup-winning squad. He previously played for Genoa and Atalanta before joining Spurs in 2021.

At White Hart Lane, he won the 2025 Europa League.
