Atletico Madrid have agreed a £34.2m fee to sign Cristian Romero from Tottenham. The 28-year-old Argentina international will become Atletico's fourth summer signing, with Spurs retaining a 15% sell-on clause. Romero was also a target for Arsenal, but Tottenham refused to sell their captain to a north London rival.\n\nRomero leaves after five seasons, making 156 appearances and scoring 13 goals.

He captained Spurs last season as they narrowly avoided relegation. The centre-back played a key role for Argentina in the World Cup, missing only one game.\n\nThe deal is a blow for Spurs fans, who also face losing Djed Spence to Inter Milan in a £25.6m transfer. Atletico's spending could exceed £100m this summer, with additions including Kang-in Lee, Morten Hjulmand, and Alejandro Grimaldo.
