Alvarez seeks exit from Atletico to chase dream

Julian Alvarez told reporters after Argentina’s 2-1 win over Austria that he wants to leave Atletico Madrid to chase his dream. The 26‑year‑old striker, who recovered from an ankle injury to feature off the bench in the World Cup, said the club’s hierarchy agreed a transfer would suit everyone, adding, ‘I try to be an honest person.’

Alvarez arrived from Manchester City for £81.5m in summer 2024 and has netted 49 goals in 106 appearances, plus 17 assists. He scored 17 league goals in his debut La Liga season but managed only eight in 2025‑26. Nevertheless, his ten Champions League strikes powered Atletico to the semi‑finals, where Arsenal ended their run.

Real Madrid turned down a 150m euro (£130m) offer for the Argentine earlier in June, while Barcelona and Paris St‑Germain have emerged as likely suitors. A move would strip Simeone of a proven scorer, forcing the Spanish side to reshuffle an attack that has struggled since Alvarez’s dip in league form.

With the World Cup looming, Alvarez’s desire could trigger one of the biggest summer transfers in European football, and Atletico must decide whether to cash in or risk weakening a squad that still relies on his Champions League pedigree.
