AC Milan Appoint New CEO After Rejecting Pulisic Transfer Bid

AC Milan has appointed Massimo Calvelli as their new CEO, just one day after rejecting a transfer approach from New York City FC for US attacker Christian Pulisic. The 51-year-old replaces Giorgio Furlani, who was dismissed by owner Red Bird Capital Partners last month following a disappointing season. Calvelli will also retain his roles at Red Bird Development Group and Red Bird Capital Partners as Operating Partner.

Milan's decision to reject NYCFC's approach for Pulisic comes despite reported interest in securing the American star to a new contract. Pulisic's current deal expires in June 2027, with an option for an additional year. However, the player is likely to wait for signs of stability before committing to any extension, potentially delaying negotiations until next summer when his transfer value would decrease.

The club's leadership shakeup follows a dramatic collapse last season. Milan spent most of the campaign in the top two positions and competing for the Serie A title, but managed only two wins in their final eight matches. This slide dropped them to fifth place on the final day, costing them Champions League qualification and resulting in multiple dismissals, including coach Massimiliano Allegri's departure.

Calvelli brings experience from his tenure as ATP CEO from 2020-25 and understands the magnitude of this appointment. 'The mandate is clear -- we will play to win, instead of playing not to lose,' Red Bird managing partner Gerry Cardinale stated. The new CEO faces immediate pressure to stabilize the club and restore its competitive edge after missing out on Europe's premier competition.
