AC Milan Sacks Allegri After Champions League Collapse

AC Milan fired head coach Massimiliano Allegri following a season the club owners called an "unequivocal failure." A 2-1 loss to Cagliari on the final matchday caused the club to drop from third to fifth place. This result means Milan missed the Champions League for the second straight year.

Investment group Red Bird Capital ordered a total overhaul of football operations. Along with Allegri, the club parted ways with chief executive Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare, and technical director Geoffrey Moncada. The owners noted that while Milan spent most of the season in the top two, they lost seven of their last 13 games.

Inter Milan, Napoli, Roma, and Como will represent Italy in Europe's top tier next season. Como qualifies for the first time in their history, while Milan now joins Juventus in the Europa League. Allegri previously won the league in 2010-11, but his second spell ended after Inter Milan secured their second Scudetto in three seasons.
