AC Milan Fires Coach After Missed Champions League

AC Milan fired coach Massimiliano Allegri and CEO Giorgio Furlani Monday after what owners called "an unequivocal failure" of a season. The team missed Champions League qualification by one point after blowing a 1-0 lead and losing at home to Cagliari 2-1. Milan spent most of Serie A in the top two but collapsed with only two wins in their last eight matches, dropping to fifth on the final day.

Owner RedBird kept only special adviser Zlatan Ibrahimovic as part of the housecleaning. The American company terminated sporting director Igli Tare, technical director Geoffrey Moncada, and Allegri after he oversaw 42 matches with 22 victories, 10 draws, and 10 defeats. RedBird managing partner Gerry Cardinale will now work with Ibrahimovic to rebuild the club's leadership structure.

The fifth-place finish means Milan will compete in the Europa League next season, a significant drop from their title aspirations. This marks the second coaching change in two years for the Rossoneri, who finished eighth in Allegri's first season back. The club's statement emphasized their desire for "comprehensive reorganization" with new appointments to be made before next season.
