US edges Germany in hockey shootout

The United States rallied for a 4-3 shootout victory over Germany at the ice hockey world championship on Wednesday. Ryan Leonard scored the decisive penalty after Tommy Novak tied the game at 3-3 with 5:47 remaining in regulation. Isaac Howard and Max Sasson also scored for the U.S., which recovered from a 6-2 loss to Finland. Germany captain Moritz Seider scored just one minute into the game.

Switzerland routed Austria 9-0 to maintain a perfect record at the tournament. Theo Rochette, Nico Hischier and Damien Riat each scored two goals as the Swiss won their fourth straight game to lead Group A with 12 points. Sven Andrighetto had three assists and Leonardo Genoni stopped 20 shots. Host Switzerland hopes to improve on runner-up finishes the previous two years.

In Group B action, Czechia rallied late to edge winless Italy 3-1. Nicholas Saracino put Italy in front before Marek Alscher tied it and Jakub Flek scored the eventual winner. Sweden defeated Slovenia 6-0 with Raymond Lucas and Jacob de la Rose each scoring twice. The Czechs lead their group with 10 points after outshooting Italy 58-15.
