Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is undecided about when he will retire from the NHL, stating he will "see" if the 2026-27 season is his last. Ovechkin, who turns 41 in September, signed a one-year contract extension worth $4.25 million annually. He returns for his 22nd season as the league's all-time leading goal scorer with 929 career goals. Last season, Ovechkin recorded 32 goals and 32 assists, playing in all 82 games.

The uncertainty surrounding his future was influenced by a difficult past season, but discussions with his wife suggest at least one more year, with a possibility of two. Ovechkin expressed he will not focus on a "retirement tour" but rather on helping his team win.

The Capitals have significantly bolstered their roster this offseason, acquiring forwards Jordan Kyrou and Alex Tuch, and signing center Boone Jenner. Owner Ted Leonsis described the team's offseason as a "rebirth," calling the current squad the "strongest, fastest and has the most depth" during his tenure. Ovechkin cited these moves as a factor in his decision to return, believing the team is now a Stanley Cup contender on paper.
