Maple Leafs Trade Nicolas Roy to Avalanche for Draft Picks

The Toronto Maple Leafs made their first move ahead of the NHL trade deadline, sending center Nicolas Roy to the Colorado Avalanche for a conditional first-round pick in 2027 and a conditional fifth-round pick in 2026. If the Avalanche's first-round selection falls outside the top 10 in 2027, Colorado will send its unprotected 2028 first-round pick to Toronto instead. The Avalanche will also send their lowest of three fifth-round picks in 2026 to the Maple Leafs.

Roy, acquired from the Vegas Golden Knights last June as the centerpiece of the Mitch Marner trade, has recorded five goals and 20 points in 59 games this season. The asking price reflects a slow-moving trade market for bigger-name forwards. Colorado needed a third-line center to complement stars Nathan MacKinnon and Brock Nelson, and Roy fits that role perfectly with his sturdy, physical skating, shutdown capabilities, and strong defensive skills.

The deal makes sense for both teams. Colorado, one of the league's best teams all season, bolstered their depth down the middle. For Toronto, struggling through their fifth straight loss and sitting seventh in the Atlantic Division, trading assets for future capital represents a pragmatic approach as the trade deadline approaches.
