Jason Robertson Files for Salary Arbitration

Dallas Stars winger Jason Robertson has filed for salary arbitration, a move that prevents him from signing an offer sheet with another NHL team. This filing means an arbitrator will decide his contract for the 2026-27 season, after which he will become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2027. Robertson, who just completed a four-year, $31 million deal, led the Stars in scoring last season with 96 points, including 45 goals.

The arbitration filing comes after a significant gap in contract negotiations between Robertson and the Stars. A potential sign-and-trade deal to send Robertson to the Seattle Kraken for the No. 7 overall pick in the recent NHL draft fell through because Robertson was unwilling to sign a long-term contract with Seattle, despite a reported offer of $120 million over eight seasons.

Robertson is one of 15 NHL players who filed for salary arbitration before Sunday's deadline. Other notable players include Jamie Drysdale of the Philadelphia Flyers and Trevor Zegras. Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nill stated that this process is a normal part of contract negotiations and that the season does not begin until September.

This situation puts the Stars in a difficult position as they risk losing a top offensive talent without compensation if a long-term agreement isn't reached before the arbitration hearing. The team will need to navigate these negotiations carefully to either secure Robertson's future in Dallas or find a suitable return if a trade becomes necessary.
