Carolina Hurricanes goalie Brandon Bussi’s NHL ascent intertwines with his advocacy for autism awareness, inspired by his nonspeaking brother, Dylan. Bussi’s custom goalie masks, crafted with Vice Design’s Allen Schneider and Swedish artist DaveArt (David Gunnarsson), feature symbols representing Dylan’s experiences. “I wanted to make that first mask representing autism because it meant something to me personally,” Bussi said, crediting his brother for shaping his maturity and worldview.

Bussi’s artistry extends beyond the rink. Collaborating with Gunnarsson, known for unique, message-driven designs, he ensured each mask reflected his evolving relationship with the autistic community. “The day he retires from hockey, he can come work with me here [in Sweden],” Gunnarsson joked, praising Bussi’s creative vision. The masks, initially personal tributes, became a platform to amplify autism awareness, blending Bussi’s professional identity with his personal mission.

Despite being undrafted and joining the NHL at 27 via waivers, Bussi defied odds, earning a 21st victory in his first 25 NHL games—a record for rookie starters. His journey included stints with the Boston Bruins’ AHL affiliate and Florida Panthers, showcasing resilience. “I’m just really focusing on the now,” he said, emphasizing adaptability amid highs and lows.

Bussi’s bond with Dylan remains central. The brother, thriving in a Long Island group home, inspired Bussi’s calm, purposeful approach to life. “Growing up, there were times people weren’t understanding,” Bussi reflected. “But seeing Dylan thrive in supportive programs fuels my drive to shine a spotlight on autism.” His story bridges personal triumph and advocacy, proving success on ice and empathy off it can coexist.
