The Minnesota Vikings have informed veteran running back Aaron Jones and defensive tackle Javon Hargrave that they will be released later this month barring a trade, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The moves will save the team $18.65 million in salary cap space as the Vikings attempt to address a $43 million deficit over the NFL's $301.2 million cap.

Jones, 31, spent two seasons with Minnesota after seven years with the Green Bay Packers. He produced career highs in 2024 with 1,138 rushing yards but injuries limited him to 548 yards in 2025. The veteran was set to earn $10 million in 2026 with a cap number of $14.8 million. Hargrave, 33, signed a two-year contract last year after recovering from a torn triceps with San Francisco. He started 15 games but managed only 3.5 sacks and was set to earn $15 million with a cap number of $21.7 million in 2026.

The Vikings' cap situation stems from two consecutive years of heavy free agent spending. Other potential candidates for contract termination include defensive tackle Jonathan Allen and center Ryan Kelly. The team could also lower cap numbers for stars like receiver Justin Jefferson, right tackle Brian O'Neill, and tight end T.J. Hockenson through extensions or restructures.
